Things worth knowing
The guides below are the explanations we give on site, written down. They cover the parts, the wear, the seasons and the upgrades, so you can revisit them whenever the door raises a question.

Repair & Maintenance
Does winter change what you look for?
Yes, mostly at floor level. Months of slush and road salt reach the lowest hinges, the bottom brackets and the loop of each cable before anything else on the door, so those get a close look for rust. The technician also checks whether the bottom seal has been freezing to the slab, how the drive has coped with cold, stiff starts, and whether frost or salt film has been blinding the sensors near the floor. Garage Door Safety Inspection
The sensor light is blinking. What does that mean?
On most openers a steady light on each photo-eye means the pair are aligned and seeing each other, and a blinking light means the beam is interrupted or the sensors are out of line. Common causes are a bracket nudged by a bin or a tire, dust or salt film on a lens, low sun at a certain hour, or a chafed wire. During a tune-up the lenses are cleaned, the brackets straightened, the pair realigned and the wiring checked back to the opener. Garage Door Tune-Up
What information helps when I call?
Say how the door is sitting: fully open, part way, or closed and crooked. Mention whether a cable is hanging loose, whether anything hit the door, whether it was frozen to the floor, and whether a vehicle is inside. The door's width and whether it has springs above the opening or along the tracks helps too. This tells the technician what hardware to bring so the reset finishes in one visit. Does changing a section affect the springs or balance?
It can. A new section may be a little heavier or lighter than the old one, particularly if insulation, glazing or a strut differs, and the springs are set for the door's actual weight. After the exchange the technician lifts the door by hand with the opener disconnected and adjusts the spring tension until it holds steady at mid-height. On a bottom-section job the springs are unloaded and reloaded as part of the work anyway. Garage Door Panel Replacement

How does the technician tell rollers from hinges or track as the cause?
By watching where and when the trouble happens and then checking the parts in that spot. Rollers are spun and wiggled to reveal rough bearings and worn wheels; hinges are checked for cracks, elongated holes and loose bolts; tracks are checked for plumb, dents and spacing. A shudder at the curve tends to be rollers, a pop as sections pivot tends to be a hinge, and a rub the full height of the door tends to be track. Often more than one is involved, and the visit covers them all. Garage Door Roller Replacement
Why did the hinge crack in the first place?
Steel flexed often enough eventually cracks, and several things speed that up. A door out of balance is dragged by the opener, and every hinge takes the strain. A seized roller twists its hinge on each trip. A track out of line pinches the panels at the curve. A wide panel without a strut flexes at the joint. Corrosion at the low hinges thins the steel. The technician looks for which of these was at work so the new hinge is spared the same stress. Garage Door Hinge Replacement
Can I hammer the track back myself?
A track is under load from the door resting in it and, at the top, from the spring shaft on the flag bracket, so working on it means securing the door and sometimes unloading the springs first. Freehand hammering also tends to push a dent into a ripple that a roller feels even more. The technician clamps the door, shapes the steel in small steps with a block or track pliers, and gauges the result with a roller. Garage Door Track Repair or Replacement
Will the springs be checked as part of cable work?
Always. Cables and springs are one system, and a spring that is weak, mismatched or wound short is a frequent reason a cable goes slack in the first place. The technician looks for breaks, measures the spring against the door weight, and confirms the correct number of turns when winding back. If a spring needs replacing, that is explained and offered as its own decision rather than folded in unannounced. Garage Door Cable Replacement

How long does a diagnosis visit take?
The checks themselves run in a set order and take a modest part of an hour on most doors. What extends a visit is the repair that follows: a gear kit or capacitor adds a little, a sensor re-wire or a trolley change adds more, and a door-side problem such as a balance fault may mean a second piece of work. You are told where things stand once the cause is found, before any further work begins. Garage Door Opener Diagnosis and Repair
How much slack should the chain have?
It is a measurement, taken with the door closed and disconnected from the trolley. At the middle of the rail the chain should sit at the height the opener's own manual specifies for its rail shape, since the figure is not the same across makes. The two nuts on the trolley set and lock it. With the door reconnected and closed, some droop appears; that is expected as long as the measurement returns when the door is open. Chain-Drive Opener Repair
Can I adjust the belt tension myself?
The adjustment nut is reachable and some owners do, but there are two things to get right. The operator must be unplugged and the door released first, and the spring must be set to the maker's length rather than tightened until the sag disappears, since an over-tight belt is noisy and hard on the motor. After any change, the reversal tests should be repeated. Many people prefer to have it done during a service. Belt-Drive Opener Repair
Will a new opener make the door quieter?
A belt or direct drive with a soft-start DC motor removes most of the operator's own noise, and a level, well-tensioned rail removes the rattle. The door contributes its own sound through rollers, hinges and springs, so the technician looks those over during the balance check and can fit nylon rollers or fresh hinges at the same time. Together the two changes turn a morning rumble into a hum. Garage Door Opener Replacement

Installation & Upgrades
Will a new door help reduce drafts?
A properly fitted replacement can improve the boundary through fresh perimeter seals, a new bottom astragal and straighter section joints. The survey also checks whether the slab is uneven or the opening is out of square, since those building conditions affect contact. Seal selection is therefore paired with measurements rather than treated as a universal cure. Sectional Garage Door Replacement
What does an R-value tell me?
An R-value describes resistance to heat flow under stated test conditions. It is useful only when you know whether the figure applies to insulation material, a section or the complete door assembly. Ask for the published basis for the exact model. Air movement at joints, windows, perimeter seals and floor gaps also affects how the garage feels in real weather. Insulated Steel Garage Door Installation
Can two single doors be replaced with one wide door?
Yes, as a coordinated renovation. The centre support, new header or beam, side jambs, electrical routing, and finished opening are building-work considerations, while the sectional door needs suitable clearances, pressure criteria, reinforcement, tracks, and attachments. Structural design and door selection should be aligned before materials are ordered so each trade works to the same dimensions. Wind-Rated Garage Door Replacement
What measurements are needed before ordering the door?
The survey records clear opening width and height, side room, headroom and backroom, often at more than one point. It also checks floor level, jamb and header condition, ceiling obstacles, track supports and opener position. These measurements determine door size and hardware layout. Exterior trim and the desired panel proportions are documented so technical fit and visual fit agree. Carriage-House Garage Door Installation
